SAN JOSE, Calif. - Jan. 31, 2004 - Aeris.net, a leading provider of wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) fixed and mobile communications services, announced today that QUALCOMM, a leader in digital wireless technology and solutions, is incorporating Aeris’ MicroBurst® short data packet messaging service into its T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS asset management solution.
QUALCOMM’s implementation will take advantage of the latest version of MicroBurst, which offers short data packet messaging capability over both CDMA digital networks and traditional analog (AMPS) cellular networks. The multimode MicroBurst network allows QUALCOMM to provide virtually ubiquitous coverage over its customers’ operating lanes in the entire NAFTA trade zone, as the T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution uses a combination of high bandwidth CDMA and MicroBurst multimode service to communicate with QUALCOMM’s Network Operations Center.
“Aeris was chosen for QUALCOMM’s untethered trailer tracking solution in order to support customers who need both analog and digital coverage in the NAFTA region,” stated Chris Wolfe, president of QUALCOMM Wireless Business Solutions. “Our goal is to offer customers a robust product that works when and where they need it to work, as well as a product that delivers value well into the future.”
MicroBurst complements QUALCOMM’s existing CDMA2000 1X service , which is the trailer tracking solution’s primary communications mode in the U.S. market. The combination of communications modes supported in the QUALCOMM untethered trailer tracking solution provides an optimized solution for coverage, capacity and cost. QUALCOMM is the first customer to embrace the multimode MicroBurst service.
“Aeris’s multimode MicroBurst seamlessly integrates both digital and analog infrastructure across all of North America,” said Dick Gossen, CEO and president of Aeris.net. “Already the leader in the transportation industry, QUALCOMM can leverage Aeris’s MicroBurst service across its growing wireless product portfolio.”
Aeris.net adapted its control channel technology to work with both analog and digital networks. The technologies will operate in conjunction with each other and will initially enable the same services that are currently being offered. New dual-mode (analog and digital) and dual-band (850 and 1900 MHz) radio modules will assess and select the technology that provides the best wireless connectivity depending on what is available in a given location. By combining the technologies, Aeris.net ensures a future proof service with robust coverage as the footprint of digital networks continues to grow over the next several years. The integration of digital access technologies adds significant functionality and enhances the speed, reliability, and quality of MicroBurst services. These additions also create new opportunities for M2M applications and services that require, or can take advantage of, a digital network.
QUALCOMM’s T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution uses a combination of high bandwidth CDMA packet data service and MicroBurst multimode service within the NAFTA region. QUALCOMM and Aeris manage the service transition between networks on the fly anywhere there is CDMA or AMPS cellular coverage within the United States, Canada and Mexico. There are no roaming or set-up charges. The T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS solution sends a short data packet to check in with QUALCOMM’s Network Operations Center. These short data packets are transmitted over cellular control channels, encrypted and delivered via a secured back-end link to QUALCOMM’s Network Operations Center, which decodes the data packets and transmits the trailer’s information to its customers.
QUALCOMM is the industry’s global leader in providing high-value wireless data solutions with a Network Operations Center that processes more than seven million transactions each day. QUALCOMM has shipped over 542,000 QUALCOMM mobile systems to businesses in more than 39 countries on four continents.
QUALCOMM Incorporated (www.qualcomm.com) is a leader in developing and delivering innovative digital wireless communications products and services based on the Company’s CDMA digital technology.
