AERIS COMMUNICATIONS SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH GTE TO ENABLE MICROBURST® SHORT-PACKET MESSAGING SERVICE IN 17 STATE CELLULAR NETWORK

Aeris Communications Now Offers Data Messaging Service to 90 Percent of U.S. and 100 Percent of Canada

WIRELESS DATA FORUM, Monterey, Calif. | May 3, 1999    —Aeris Communications today announced an agreement with GTE to deploy Aeris's proprietary MicroBurst messaging technology on the control channels of GTE's 17 state cellular network. MicroBurst technology provides reliable, cost-effective communication with remote devices and equipment for alarm and security, automated meter reading, global positioning and other telemetry applications.

The expansion of Aeris' coverage to GTE's territory will enable MicroBurst service to serve major markets such as San Francisco, Houston, Cleveland, Tampa and San Jose. Through separate agreements with only 13 cellular carriers, Aeris' footprint now extends to 90 percent of the U.S. cellular service areas and 100 percent of Canada. By partnering with the major carriers across the country, such as Bell Atlantic, Ameritech, AirTouch, Western Wireless and now GTE, MicroBurst service is enabled only on networks with the highest service quality and network reliability for its customers and fortune 10,000 users.

"We are convinced that our 'best-of-breed' strategy, whether in network deployment or in application development and distribution, is the key to successful rollout of a new, cutting edge solution in wireless today, " said Dick Gossen, president and chief executive officer of Aeris Communications. "The addition of the GTE relationship is an important part of this plan."

Aeris 'best of breed' applications developers include ADEMCO, the world's largest security equipment manufacturer, QUALCOMM's Wireless Business Solutions, the leader in commercial vehicle tracking and monitoring, and ABB Metering Systems, the world's largest manufacturer of solid state utility meters. In addition, there are over 50 applications either commercially available or in development today.

How MicroBurst Technology Works

MicroBurst technology is a proprietary utility that enables short data packets to be transmitted over control channels in cellular networks using standard IS-41B signaling mechanisms. These short data packets are transmitted by cellular devices and are routed to the Aeris central hub facility over existing SS#7 (Signaling System 7) networks. The Aeris hub identifies the service provider, the ultimate recipient for the data, and routes the data for delivery via one of several available back-end links, which include Internet, dial-up and dedicated connectivity.

MicroBurst technology provides ubiquity of service and the lowest possible cost structure. All data distribution is handled by Aeris' central clearinghouse facility. This distribution strategy makes MicroBurst technology fully mobile and enables all MicroBurst devices to roam throughout the United States and Canada.
