SAN JOSE, Calif. | September 20, 1999 Aeris.net, the provider of MicroBurst short-packet data messaging technology and AirIQ Inc., a leading provider of Global Positioning System (GPS) based fleet management services, announced an agreement to service the vehicle tracking and monitoring markets. Under the terms of this agreement, AirIQ will implement MicroBurst technology in its comprehensive, OnBoardT asset tracking product used for large commercial fleet applications. Some features of the AirIQ solution include location upon demand, boundary reporting, excessive speed reports, accident reconstruction, as well as the ability to remotely disable stolen vehicles.
MicroBurst-enabled AirIQ fleet tracking makes complex technology simple to use. The AirIQ OnlineT service manages all of the communications to and from customer vehicles relaying Aeris MicroBurst messages quickly and efficiently over the existing control channels of the cellular network. The data is then formatted to a PC-based digitized mapping system and immediately available to customers via the Internet.
"MicroBurst service is a key component in expanding the AirIQ service suite with ubiquitous terrestrial-based wireless coverage," said Dan Seto, Vice President of Technology Planning at AirIQ. "Microburst service is a key enabler of our objective to deliver the lowest cost asset management service in North America."
"This agreement further highlights the growing success of the intelligent vehicle market," said Wade Vesey, Vice President of Sales and Marketing of Aeris. "AirIQ clearly exemplifies the global market potential, and we are pleased that MicroBurst service can enable their inventive tracking solution."
MicroBurst technology is a proprietary utility that enables short data packets to be transmitted over control channels in cellular networks using standard IS-41B signaling mechanisms. These short data packets are transmitted by cellular devices and are routed to the Aeris central hub facility over existing SS#7 (Signaling System 7) networks. The Aeris.net hub identifies AirIQ as the service provider and routes the data for delivery via a back-end link, which includes Internet, dial-up and dedicated connectivity.
MicroBurst technology provides ubiquity of service and the lowest possible cost structure. All data distribution is handled by Aeris' central clearinghouse facility. This distribution strategy makes MicroBurst technology fully mobile and enables all MicroBurst devices to roam North America-wide.
ased in Pickering, Ontario, AirIQ develops wireless fleet management solutions for commercial vehicles. The AirIQ solution, a marriage of wireless communications, Global Positioning System (GPS), digitized mapping and on-board computer intelligence, acts as an intelligent "black box" for commercial vehicles. AirIQ was formed in 1997 and is a privately held company.
Aeris.net, headquartered in San Jose, Calif., provides wireless connectivity for a broad array of short packet signaling and messaging services using its proprietary MicroBurst utility. MicroBurst technology employs the control channel infrastructure of the cellular network as a transmission medium to achieve low cost of service and ubiquitous coverage. Aeris.net currently has contracts to deploy MicroBurst technology in over 97 percent of cellular service areas in the United States and 100 percent of Canada. Initial applications include vehicle position and condition reporting, security and equipment monitoring, and utility meter reading.
