ECHOPORT, INC.™ DEPLOYS AERIS MICROBURST® TECHNOLOGY FOR WIRELESS WEB-BASED APPLIANCES

MicroBurst Technology Enables Cost-Effective Monitoring of Alarms, Motion Detectors and Meter-Reading Devices

WIRELESS IT, Santa Clara, Calif. | November 2, 1999    —Aeris.net, the leading provider of MicroBurstT short-packet data messaging technology, today announced an agreement with EchoPort, Inc.T, to enable wireless data and imaging solutions for remote information acquisition and off-site device automation. EchoPort will deploy MicroBurst technology to provide consumers and small system owners seamless, low cost and reliable device notification service throughout the United States and Canada..

MicroBurst technology serves as the backbone for EchoPort's innovative web-based appliances and services. By using the control channels of the cellular network, critical messages are transmitted in real time from an embedded transceiver located within the device to EchoPort CentralT, the central communications facility for tracking management. Due to the open architecture of EchoPort Central, these interactions can occur via the interface most convenient to the end user - a cell phone, pager, Web page or e-mail. The next generation of EchoPort devices, including highly sensitive alarms and a new infrared watchdog motion sensor are available to the consumer in many major retail outlets across the country.

"By expanding areas of coverage and broadening the data capacity of EchoPort's Internet Intelligence, MicroBurst is allowing greater service to the end-user," said Lynley O'Donnell, CEO of EchoPort. "Our partnership bridges the gap between cellular communications and Internet connectivity."

"EchoPort's product line are designed to target very large retail market opportunities," said Wade Vesey, vice president of Sales and Marketing of Aeris.net. "Aeris is pleased to provide EchoPort with the seamless, low cost and reliable monitoring pathways for its wireless Web-based appliances."

How MicroBurst Works

MicroBurst technology is a proprietary utility that enables short data packets to be transmitted over control channels in cellular networks using standard IS-41B signaling mechanisms. These short data packets are transmitted by cellular devices and are routed to the Aeris central hub facility over existing SS7 (Signaling System 7) networks. The Aeris hub identifies EchoPort as the service provider and routes the data for delivery via a back-end link, which includes Internet, dial-up and dedicated connectivity. The end-user is notified of activity via cell phone, pager Web page or e-mail.
