CTIA WIRELESS 2000, New Orleans, La. | Feb 28, 2000 Aeris.net today announced the creation of Aeris.net South America, to deploy Aeris's patented MicroBurst® messaging technology throughout Central and South America. MicroBurst technology, which operates over the control channels of cellular carrier networks, enables Web-to-wireless connectivity and control of intelligent devices for alarm and security, global positioning, automated meter reading and other telemetry applications.
Initial expansion of Aeris's service to Latin America includes an agreement with Telecel Paraguay Cellular to deploy MicroBurst technology throughout their cellular network. Telecel Paraguay is owned by Millicom, an international cellular network operator with networks throughout the world, including Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
"Creating Aeris.net South America to expand the reach of MicroBurst service in South and Central America further strengthens Aeris's position in the global marketplace," commented Dick Gossen, chairman and CEO of Aeris.net. "Combined with our recent agreement with Telcel in Mexico, the MicroBurst network will extend throughout the western hemisphere."
The expansion to South and Central America will enable MicroBurst technology to service markets covering more than 300 million people. This broad coverage area will ensure that MicroBurst application developers and service providers have the most extensive service access available in South and Central America.
"The need for low-cost, broad and reliable coverage is tremendous due to inefficient security and monitoring logistics issues in each country," stated Robert Schoenfield, president of Aeris.net South America. "Telecel is a market and technology leader and this agreement provides us with the foundation to offer MicroBurst service throughout South and Central America. Customers in South America will not only have a robust wireless telemetry network in South America, but also have access to the North American market with the same equipment, a critical requirement for multinational OEM applications."
In addition to South and Central America, Aeris currently provides service throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The addition of Latin America provides application developers an enormous opportunity to deploy their products to telemetry markets with significant under-served demand.
MicroBurst technology is a proprietary utility that enables short data packets to be transmitted over control channels in cellular networks using standard IS-41C signaling mechanisms. These short data packets are transmitted by cellular devices and are routed to the Aeris central hub facility over existing SS7 (Signaling System 7) networks. The Aeris hub identifies the service provider, the ultimate recipient for the data, and routes the data for delivery via one of several available back-end links, which include Internet, dial-up and dedicated connectivity.
MicroBurst technology provides ubiquity of service and the lowest possible cost structure. All data distribution is handled by Aeris' central clearinghouse facility. This distribution strategy makes MicroBurst technology fully mobile and enables all MicroBurst devices to roam throughout the United States and Canada.
Aeris.net, headquartered in San Jose, Calif., provides wireless connectivity for a broad array of short packet signaling and messaging services using its proprietary MicroBurst utility. MicroBurst technology employs the control channel infrastructure of the cellular network as a transmission medium to achieve low cost of service and ubiquitous coverage. Aeris.net currently has contracts to deploy MicroBurst technology in over 97 percent of cellular service areas in the United States and 100 percent of Canada. Initial applications include vehicle position and condition reporting, security and equipment monitoring, and utility meter reading.
