DPL TELEMETRY TECHNOLOGIES TO DEPLOY AERIS.NET'S MICROBURST™ TECHNOLOGY FOR VENDING MACHINE AND FLEET WIRELESS MONITORING

MicroBurst Service Enables Cost-Effective Monitoring of DPL's Cellutions™ Products

San Jose, Calif. | June 5, 2000    —Aeris.net, the leading provider of web-to-wireless, machine-to-machine communications services, today announced an agreement with DPL Telemetry Technologies, a division of The DPL Group, to enable low-cost, wireless messaging services for DPL's vending machine and vehicle fleet monitoring devices using Aeris's MicroBurst™ network.

DPL Telemetry Technologies custom designs complete systems for wireless data monitoring and has incorporated MicroBurst service into two of its products, the VMS-100 Vehicle Monitoring System and the VEN-100 Vending Machine Monitoring System. DPL's VMS-100 Vehicle Monitoring System allows fleet managers to collect vehicle maintenance information, such as mileage, engine run hours and engine temperature violations. It can also provide Global Positioning System (GPS) services. The VEN-100 Vending Machine Monitoring System allows vendors to remotely monitor their vending machines for improved management of inventory and distribution. In both cases, messages containing critical data are sent from DPL devices and routed using MicroBurst service to the MicroBurst hub located in San Jose, California. The data is then sent to DPL's central hub in Saint John, New Brunswick, which forwards the information to customers via their web site, a static Internet connection, e-mail or pager. This process occurs in a matter of seconds.

"The wireless telemetry market for services such as fleet management and vending machine monitoring contains more than 50 million units North America-wide. This is an enormous opportunity," said Wade Vesey, vice president of sales and marketing at Aeris.net "Aeris is excited be working with an industry forerunner such as DPL Telemetry Technologies to bring these services to market."

"We wanted to provide our customers with seamless coverage without having to manage relationships with a variety of network providers," said Ray Crowdis, director of the DPL Group. "The Aeris network, which spans all of North America, provides a high data integrity solution at an affordable price."

How MicroBurst Works

MicroBurst technology is a proprietary utility that enables short data packets to be transmitted over control channels in cellular networks using standard IS-41C signaling mechanisms. These short data packets are transmitted by cellular devices and are routed to the Aeris central hub facility over existing SS7 (Signaling System 7) networks. The Aeris hub identifies the service provider, the ultimate recipient for the data, and routes the data for delivery via one of several available back-end links, which include Internet, dial-up and dedicated connectivity.

MicroBurst technology provides ubiquity of service and the lowest possible cost structure. All data distribution is handled by Aeris' central clearinghouse facility. This distribution strategy makes MicroBurst technology fully mobile and enables all MicroBurst devices to roam throughout the North, South and Central America.
