SAN JOSE, Calif. | December 19, 2000 Aeris.net, the leading provider of Web-to-wireless, machine-to-machine communication services, announces further expansion of its MicroBurst® network via a new partnership with cellular carrier Petroleum Communications (PetroCom). The carrier partnership will extend Aeris.net's MicroBurst messaging service area to key offshore territories providing service to the oil and gas pipeline and mobile asset industries. Aeris.net's network now covers a total population of over 293 million throughout North America.
"We continue to expand our North American wide footprint not only over land, but over sea," said Wade Vesey, vice president of marketing for Aeris.net. "Our customers requested service in the Gulf area and we responded. This partnership with PetroCom is critical to achieving a network that is truly seamless."
Aeris.net's wireless services use the existing infrastructure of cellular networks. As a result of this agreement, Aeris.net and PetroCom customers will be able to develop and deploy wireless telemetry solutions to all of the Gulf of Mexico.
"By hosting the Aeris.net service on our offshore cellular network, PetroCom makes available to our customer base an effective, low cost solution for communicating to literally thousands of offshore end-devices," said Mark Littlejohn, vice president of satellite and data services at PetroCom. Aeris.net's service model complements PetroCom's position as a full service provider of data and voice solutions to the offshore community."
Aeris.net's MicroBurst technology is a patented utility that enables short-packet data to be transmitted over control channels in cellular networks using standard IS-41C signaling mechanisms. This short-packet data is transmitted by cellular devices and is routed to the Aeris.net central hub facility over existing SS7 (Signaling System 7) networks. The Aeris.net hub identifies the service provider and routes the data for delivery via a back-end link, which includes Internet, dial-up and dedicated connectivity. The end-user is notified of activity via cell phone, pager, fax, Web page or e-mail.
Headquartered in Harahan, LA, Petroleum Communications, Inc., known as "PetroCom," is a wholly owned subsidiary of S&P Cellular Holding, Inc. PetroCom was founded in 1983 to construct, develop and operate the first cellular/satellite communications network. The company owns the non-wireline cellular license for the Gulf of Mexico Metropolitan Statistical Area as defined by the FCC. The system, initially activated in 1986, has grown to include a satellite hub station in New Orleans. PetroCom also provides C-Band and Ku-Band satellite services; both fixed and stabilized, from its earth stations located in New Orleans. The company's primary customers are major corporations in the oil and gas industry, certain government bodies and other marine users. There are offices in Houston, Texas and Lafayette, Louisiana.
Aeris.net, headquartered in San Jose, Calif., provides web-to-wireless connectivity and control for a broad array of short-packet signaling and messaging services using its proprietary MicroBurst® utility. MicroBurst® technology employs the control channel infrastructure of the cellular network as a transmission medium to achieve low cost of service and ubiquitous coverage. Aeris.net currently has contracts deploying MicroBurst® technology in cellular service areas in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Initial applications include vehicle position and condition reporting, security and equipment monitoring and utility meter reading.
