SAN JOSE, Calif., and AUSTIN, Texas | June 4, 2001 —Aeris.net, a leading provider of web-to-wireless machine-to-machine communications services, and American Innovations, one of the fastest growing suppliers of remote monitoring solutions, today announced their joint efforts to help protect environmentally sensitive areas and local communities from hazardous pipeline leaks and explosions by using Aeris.net's wireless telemetry network services and American Innovations' Bullhorn(TM) Remote Monitoring System to remotely monitor pipelines throughout North America.
"More than 2 million miles of pipeline weave across the U.S., transporting all sorts of hazardous materials, including natural gas, oil, and chemicals," said Wade Vesey, Vice President of Marketing at Aeris.net. "By teaming with American Innovations and leveraging Aeris's North American wide wireless telemetry network, companies can be notified of their pipeline conditions well before a critical event develops. This helps these companies make informed decisions about their pipelines, which ultimately helps protect our remote wilderness regions, and the local communities where these hazardous materials may pass."
A recent government report indicates that pipeline accidents have been on the rise, and from the period of 1989 to 1998, more than 200 people have been killed, over 1,000 injured and more than $700 million incurred in property damage.
Cathodic protection is an industry method that helps protect pipelines from corroding and leaking. However, this protection can fail in spots, usually around areas of key distribution, such as where injection pumps connect with the pipeline. At these junctures, leaks can develop, which can quickly escalate into serious situations, including explosions. To combat this, low flying airplanes and service teams regularly brave the elements to make manual inspections.
By teaming with American Innovations, Aeris.net's wireless telemetry network becomes the ideal solution to continuously monitor pipelines, regardless of weather conditions. Data such as level of flow, temperature and pressure, is sent wirelessly through Aeris's wireless telemetry hub, where it is securely routed to any Web browser around the world. By having this data, pipeline companies can proactively manage and take action before a potential crisis develops.
"American Innovations currently has Bullhorn devices installed to monitor pipeline conditions in all areas of the United States for many major pipeline companies. For example, we're using Bullhorn in the swamps of Louisiana, to help protect one of the most delicate and diverse ecological systems in the country," said Lee Blankenstein, Director of Sales and Marketing at American Innovations. "The wireless telemetry solutions powered by Aeris and American Innovations offers a completely safe and invisible way to monitor pipelines, even in the most remote and sensitive habitats."
Based in Austin Texas, American Innovations is a fast growing provider of products and services for web-based remote monitoring, including automatic meter reading, alarm point monitoring and remote equipment control. Since 1987, the company's AIMetering System® has been a leader in telephone-based automated utility metering.
